Developing Digital Designs

This week my main focus was to create a set of digital designs that could possibly be used as a final set of outcomes for this project. I have used photos from lots of different 3D and light experiments that I have previously created.

I also made a squiggly brush motif from a picture of slack thread that I had taken in a previous experiment.

I produced over 30 samples this week, but here are some of the ones which I think worked best. I think I was happy with them because of the colour, line quality and composition. I also liked how in some of them, a glowing effect started to occur which I thought might suit a lampshade.

As an experiment I also incorporated some of my earlier drawings and sketchbook ideas into my designs, shown below. This included watercolour, my fingerprint experiments, and a selection of audacity drawings.

The next stage for me is to look into the context of my work, and place my designs onto photos in photoshop.

Stitching back into my photography.

I have really struggled this week; I feel lost, stuck and confused about where my project is going. I thought it was a sensible idea to just 'make stuff' despite the way I have been feeling, and I produced these pieces. They are printed out photos that I manipulated in photoshop of the work I did last week.

I stitched into them to create holes with the needle so I could take more blurred pictures using the light.

I thought the best results were the last 2 pictures as they started to look 3D and the colour of the background print really enhanced my work.

I also discovered that I love working in this way! Taking photos of my work and working back into them is something I've never really done before. I am looking forward to putting them back into photoshop and I like this cycle of constantly feeding my work back into itself. I will definitely be using this method again in other projects.

Photoshop: 3D stitch/light samples.

In order to get to grips with photoshop a bit more, I decided to use the photos that I had taken to layer up the lines created by the stitch and 3D samples. I was very happy with the results, and I liked layering up the different line qualities.

I also liked the contrasting circle shapes created by the light coming through the holes in the paper when I took the photos.

I have discovered through doing these samples that I love using photoshop as part of my practice. I don't know how to use it very well but I feel that when I feel more confident using it, it will really enhance my work, and allow me to mix processes really easily.

Stitch: Blurring and Lighting

So far blurring has been a part of my work due to the dragging effecting created by the sound waves I discovered whilst using audacity, so I thought I would develop it further into my photography and photoshop. Here are some deliberately blurred images using the manual focus on my camera.

I used the sample that was stitched on paper to do these photos, in front of a light source to see what the blurring effect had on the holes of light.

For the sample above, the light source was the TV, and it was interesting to see the colours change.

I am really happy with the results, so the next step will be to work from them and put them into photoshop and work with them.
